Kaiser Permanente Comes Into Its Own
When the war came to an end, the shipyard workforce fell from 90,000 to just 13,000 employees in only a few months. Only about a dozen of the 75 members of the medical group remained. But Dr. Garfield wanted to keep practicing his new form of health care delivery, and Kaiser wanted the plan to continue as well.
Therefore, on October 1, 1945, the Permanente Health Plan officially opened to the public. In 10 years, enrollment surpassed 300,000 members in Northern California. In these early years, the success of the health plan was largely the result of support from unions. Two unions, the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union and the Retail Clerks Union were the driving force behind bringing the health plan to Los Angeles..
In 1952, the name of the Health Plan and the Hospitals was changed from Permanente, which some felt had little meaning outside the organization, to Kaiser, which had high recognition nationally because of Kaiser Industries and Henry J. Kaiser himself. The medical group chose to keep the Permanente name, in part to clarify that they were not employees of Henry J. Kaiser.
Thus, the organization known in modern times as Kaiser Permanente was born. We are still a working partnership of two organizations: the not-for-profit Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, and the Permanente Medical Groups.

The Rogers Difference
Rogers Benefit Group is dedicated to helping brokers and their staff implement and renew their clients’ medical and non-medical benefits. We help brokers maximize their bottom line by making it easy for them to sell, install, service and renew their groups. We provide complete and accurate information needed to prospect and close sales. We assist brokers and their staff members to communicate the necessary information to their clients. We make it possible for brokers to increase profitability by taking care of the detail and leg work, to the extent the broker directs.
RBG provides a "turn-key" approach to the detail, legwork, and paperwork of making a sale and renewing the business.
During the plan year when issues and questions arise with the benefits, RBG works closely with the broker’s office/and or client to resolve situations when the normal service channels have been exhausted. Brokers and their staff can concentrate on other firms, other sales, and other activities as RBG works with the insurance companies to solve often time consuming issues.
For nearly 30 years, Word & Brown has helped brokers strengthen and maintain their existing client relationships and prospect for new ones. Our selection of carriers and products continues to be the industry’s most desired.
